Expedition 03 · Tokyo Without End

A beacon of light over the endless city. Tokyo Tower is one of the most visible landmarks in Tokyo. Standing 333 meters tall, it continues to define the city's skyline to this day and has lost none of its appeal even in the age of new super-skyscrapers.

The delicately illuminated tower, the endless cityscape, and in the distance, even the Rainbow Bridge. For me, it is precisely this interplay of iconic architecture, depth, and light that gives this image its special allure.

For me, Tokyo Tower is much more than just a structure. It is one of those landmarks that becomes deeply etched into the image of a city, and whose presence can be felt from a great distance.

Directly opposite, the new Azabudai Hills Mori JP Tower gave me my first opportunity for a shot that I had been missing for years: a nighttime view of Tokyo Tower from above.

I had already tested the viewpoint during the day. The biggest challenge quickly became clear: shooting through glass, with no open-air deck. So, I planned the framing, reflections, and the position of the Rainbow Bridge in advance.

In the evening, I stood right against the glass with my tripod. A circular polarizer, a foldable anti-reflection lens hood, black lens cloths, and a remote shutter release helped to almost completely eliminate the reflections from the illuminated interior.

A POINT OF LIGHT ABOVE AN ENDLESS CITY

Below Tokyo Tower, the city loses itself in countless windows, streets, and lights. And yet, the orange-red tower holds one's gaze – calm above a metropolis that never quite stands still.
