expedition 05 · Lights beyond the bridge

For me, the decisive factor was the connection between the clearly defined bridge and the metropolis glowing beyond it.

In November, there is often a haze over the water. At such times, the skyline in the background is lost. Not on this evening. The bridge, Tokyo Tower, and the city lights became a single image for a moment.

Tokyo does not end at the Rainbow Bridge.

That was crucial for me for this shot. From the shores of Odaiba, the bridge stretches far across the bay. Its two white pylons and the illuminated suspension cables initially dominate the view. But beyond them, the city continues.

Tokyo's skyscrapers appear between the bridge's structures. The orange-lit Tokyo Tower stands exactly in the opening beneath the suspension cables. To its left, the approximately 330-meter-tall Azabudai Hills Mori JP Tower—currently the tallest building in Japan—rises up. The problem was the visibility.

I knew this perspective and the composition I was looking for.

In November, haze often settles over the bay. While the Rainbow Bridge is clearly visible then, the city behind it loses its contours. Buildings vanish. Lights become soft. The spatial depth I wanted for this image is lost.

THE CITY DOES NOT END AT THE BRIDGE

White pylons and fine lines of light define the foreground. Beyond them, Tokyo truly begins: skyscrapers, windows, and the warm orange of Tokyo Tower – light upon light.
